National awareness campaign on plastic pollution
Ascencia collaborates with the Ministry of Environment
To mark the World Environment Day in Mauritius, the Ministry of Environment, Solid Waste Management and Climate Change is organizing, with various stakeholders, a nation-wide awareness campaign on plastic pollution, its harmful effects and the alternatives to plastics products.
A ceremony was held on Sunday, 5 June 2022, to launch officially the campaign with 3D structures, currently displayed at Phoenix Mall. The aim is to roll out these structures across the portfolio.
This campaign is an opportunity for Ascencia to highlight its efforts in implementing actions for sustainable operations across its seven malls.
- Renewable energy
During the financial year 2021, our photovoltaic farms, which are on the roofs of Bagatelle Mall, Phoenix Mall, Kendra and Les Allées, have produced 2.6m KWH of energy, representing approximately the normal consumption of more than 300 houses over a year.
These farms produce up to 30% of the consumption of our shopping malls and are part of the vast program undertaken by Ascencia to reduce its energy consumption coming directly from fossil fuels.
- 40% of waste recycled
Thanks to our “sorting at source” project, our shopping malls are currently recycling between 30% and 40% of waste every month, hence reducing the waste dumped at Mare Chicose. Our goal is to reach 70% of recycled waste by 2024. This would represent around 150 tons of recycled waste per month.
We are currently working on setting up a Bio Gas pilot station at Bagatelle Mall for the transformation of our waste. This project will use organic waste, generated by tenants, for the production of chilled water for air conditioning and high-quality compost.
