Oovana Poovin: first female Operations Officer of Ascencia

From studying Mechatronics Engineering to overseeing critical projects like the chiller installation upgrade, Oovana Poovin is now part of the operational team at Bagatelle Mall as an Operations Officer. Oovana was recruited as a fresh graduate from the University of Mauritius on a traineeship to eventually being employed as the first female Operations Officer. Her dedication to operational efficiency, sustainability, and building strong relationships with stakeholders sets this 24-year-old woman apart in her field.

Question 1: How did your experience as a Trainee Engineer in Ascencia contribute to your growth and development?

My experience as a Trainee Engineer within the Operational Excellence team at Ascencia was a transformative learning opportunity. While overseeing the Central Chiller System installation at Bagatelle Mall, I encountered various complex challenges which required to be addressed with tact and efficiency in an operating mall. By collaborating closely with tenants, I ensured their concerns were heard and addressed promptly through effective communication channels and coordination with maintenance teams.

Moreover, overseeing the installation of the chiller system provided invaluable experience in project management, technical problem-solving, and stakeholder engagement. Through liaising with tenants, supervising installation progress, and managing supplier relationships, I enhanced my multitasking, time management, and attention to detail skills.

This experience not only strengthened my confidence but also deepened my understanding of operational challenges and opportunities for improvement within our facilities. It was a learning opportunity that has shaped my professional growth profoundly.

Question 2: What are some of the key responsibilities and challenges you face as an Operations Officer at Bagatelle Mall?

As an Operations Officer, I handle a diverse range of responsibilities to ensure the smooth functioning of the mall’s operations and facilities. From performing preventive maintenance tasks using our digital platform to managing billing, coordination with service providers and contractors, overseeing site works and surveys and closely monitoring procurement and budget, my role is very dynamic and diverse. One of the key challenges I face is maintaining continuous communication and coordination with our operations team. Additionally, managing service providers adds another layer of complexity to my role.

By adopting open communication, providing immediate support, and promoting a collaborative work environment, we address challenges proactively, resolve issues efficiently, and deliver exceptional service to our visitors and tenants.

Question 3: How do you use your background in Mechatronics Engineering to improve operational efficiency and sustainability in your current role?

My background in Mechatronics Engineering serves as a good foundation for driving operational efficiency and sustainability in my current role as an Operations Officer. Whether it is upgrading the AC system to distribute fresh air more efficiently in shops and malls or implementing preventive maintenance strategies using digital tools, I use my technical expertise to identify opportunities for improvement and innovation. By combining engineering principles with operational best practices onsite, our team at Bagatelle Mall increases operational performance, reduces costs and creates a more sustainable environment for our stakeholders.
