Asking questions: the key to personal and professional growth

Vanishabye Gunnoo, Leasing & Legal Coordinator at Bagatelle Mall and So’flo

My introduction to leasing

I joined the company as an Operations Admin in June 2018. A few months later, I was offered the role of Leasing Coordinator at Bagatelle Mall, the largest mall in our portfolio. I was initially unfamiliar with the role's demands and had to learn everything from scratch. Being attentive to details and asking questions was not just helpful—it was crucial.

The role required strong organisational and time management skills. I quickly learned to multitask and handle detailed paperwork efficiently. My ability to work collaboratively helped me manage deadlines effectively while developing conflict-resolution skills ensured satisfaction for all stakeholders.

Over the past six years, the continuous learning curve in this role has been challenging but incredibly rewarding. I owe much of my success to the support from colleagues and managers who patiently answered my endless questions, and I cherish the empowerment of my managers to make decisions.

Skills acquired over time

I learned that effective listening is crucial. Direct, on-the-job experiences have been profoundly educational. Managing time effectively has helped me meet deadlines and juggle multiple responsibilities simultaneously. Additionally, I found that allowing others to express themselves without interruption—opened my mind to different perspectives.

Overcoming challenges

When I first assumed the role of Leasing Coordinator, I had no experience in the leasing business. If I had hesitated to seek help, I would not have grown. It took a full year to grasp the complexities of leasing processes and their implications fully, but my determination kept me moving forward. My natural persistence, similar to the typical Taurus trait, served me well in facing these challenges. I rarely give up.

Reflecting on the past six years, I take pride in my achievements and the progress I have made. With ongoing support from management and my dedication to our company, I am confident that I will continue to advance despite future challenges.

Key traits for success in leasing

Success in this role depends on several key traits:

(a) A thorough understanding of lease agreements and ensuring compliance.

(b) Strong communication skills to build and maintain relationships with tenants, landlords, the internal team and other stakeholders.

(c) Effective time management and organisational skills to handle leases, schedules, and administrative tasks without stress.

(d) Be very attentive to details.

Advice to the younger generations

As someone who has grown significantly by asking questions and being open to learning, I strongly advise the younger generation to cultivate patience and curiosity. These traits will be vital to personal and professional growth.
