Valérie Sénèque Breast Cancer Screening Center Opens at Bo'Valon Mall
Facilitating access to breast cancer screening for residents of the southeastern regions of Mauritius – this is the goal of the “Valérie Sénèque Breast Cancer” center, inaugurated at Bo'Valon Mall, a shopping mall managed by Ascencia, on Saturday, October 26, 2024. This container, set up in the parking area of Bo'Valon Mall, is a first for Breast Cancer Care Mauritius. It will be open to the public for consultations and follow-ups, with doctors and psychologists from “Breast Cancer Care” available one day a week.
Founded in 2014 by Shammima Patel, president of the association, Breast Cancer Care aims to support and accompany breast cancer patients while educating the public on adopting a healthier lifestyle. Diagnosed with breast cancer in 2010, Shammima Patel overcame the illness thanks to prompt medical care and family support and is now in remission. Her commitment to raising awareness and sharing a message of hope extends to the entire population.
“The center bears the name of Valérie Sénèque, a woman whose courage in the face of illness remains an inspiration to all. Diagnosed with breast cancer, she fought with unwavering determination. Through this center, we pay tribute to her memory and her struggle. The Breast Cancer Care association is grateful to Bo'Valon Mall for their support, which allows us to increase awareness among residents of the south and neighbouring regions. Located strategically, this center will facilitate access to care for residents who sometimes find it challenging to reach our offices in Vacoas or Port Louis,” explains Shammima Patel, president of Breast Cancer Care Mauritius.
The “Valérie Sénèque Breast Cancer” screening center will offer the same services as the two other centers of the association. A psychologist will be available for therapy sessions with patients, providing support that includes home visits, online therapy, and on-site consultations. Mastectomy bras, breast prostheses, wigs, and scarves will also be provided to patients. A doctor will also be available to the public once a week to perform a free examination.
Bo'Valon Mall is proud to support the national breast cancer screening campaign initiated by Breast Cancer Care. “Early screening plays a fundamental role in the fight against breast cancer. Due to our location in the southeastern part of the island, we wish to facilitate access to screening for women in this region. With this screening center set up in Bo'Valon Mall's parking lot, we aim to raise awareness about the importance of prevention and health. By combining our efforts, we hope to make prevention a priority,” states Sandanavallee Mooneyan, Center Manager of Bo'Valon Mall.
