Ascencia joins hands with Mo’zar Espace Artistic to change lives through music
Ascencia is excited to announce its support to Mo’zar Espace Artistic, a non-government organisation that has been transforming the lives of young people through music since 1996. Founded by the late José Thérèse, Mo’zar has brought hope and opportunity to Roche Bois, a neighbourhood that has struggled with poverty for many years. By teaching music, Mo’zar helps children find a path away from hardship and toward a brighter future.
Music as a tool for change
After studying at the Conservatory of Music in Copenhagen, José Thérèse returned to Mauritius and was struck by the tough conditions in his hometown, Roche Bois. Families lived in extreme poverty, while children faced challenges like school dropouts and a lack of opportunities. Determined to help, José used his savings to buy instruments and began teaching music to children in the area.
What started as a small effort quickly grew into something extraordinary. Within months, his students achieved their Grade 1 certification from the Royal School of Music. Over the years, Mo’zar has trained hundreds of young musicians. Some have gone on to perform in hotels, join the police band, or participate in regional jazz festivals. The unique “Sega Jazz” style, a blend of traditional Mauritian Sega and Jazz, developed by Mo’zar is a symbol of how music can bring cultures together.
How Ascencia is Supporting Mo’zar
Ascencia believes in the power of music and culture to inspire and unite people. That’s why we have partnered with Mo’zar to help them continue their incredible work. Our support will focus on:
- Helping young musicians grow: Funding training programs for Mo’zar students to sharpen their skills.
- Creating performance opportunities for the youths: Giving Mo’zar students a chance to perform in our malls: Bagatelle Mall, Phoenix Mall, Riche Terre Mall, Bo’Valon Mall, So’flo, Kendra, and Les Allées.
- Providing tools for success: Donating musical instruments and equipment to help Mo’zar train even more young musicians.
Ascencia’s commitment to Arts and Culture
Beyond supporting Mo’zar, Ascencia is deeply committed to promoting arts and culture in Mauritius. Throughout the year, we organise live music concerts, traditional shows, and immersive experiences such as the Dome Experience at Bagatelle Mall that celebrate creativity and diversity, captivating visitors of all ages.
Making a difference together
Today, Mo’zar supports 106 children and young adults, aged 8 to 20, primarily from Roche Bois and the surrounding areas. Music is more than just a skill for these young people, it’s a way to build confidence, learn discipline, and dream of a better future.
By working with Mo’zar, Ascencia is proud to help create opportunities for these talented young musicians. Together, we are not just making music, we are building hope, nurturing talent, and enriching communities through the arts.
